Selecting foods that are dangerous to pet birds is quite challenging. This is because one type of food that may cause illness to one kind of bird does not necessarily react the same to another. Again, saying a specific food is dangerous is a tricky thing. This is because if the food is consumed in small amounts, it will not cause any harm, and when it is consumed in excessive amounts, it may lead to death or illness.

Avian veterinarians say that, if a particular food is toxic to other pets, the most likely thing is that the food is also harmful to pet birds. Below are some of the foods that are toxic to birds.

1. Chocolate


Chocolates contain caffeine and Theobromine. These two might cause tremors, increased heart rate, seizures, hyperactivity as well as death. The darker the chocolate, the more harmful it is to your pet bird.

Sugar-free candy contains sugar xylitol that causes liver damage and hypoglycemia in dogs and birds. Thus, candy is not ideal for your pets.

5. Avocado


Avocado trees together with its parts have persin that is a fungicidal toxin. The toxin causes cardiac arrest in birds. A bird starts developing respiratory distress 12 hours after ingestion and the pet can die within two or three days. The most susceptible birds are budgies and canaries.

The green leaf herb is associated with causing liver damage. Therefore, please do not allow your pet bird to feed on it.

7. High-sugar foods, high-sodium, and high-fat foods

Milk and dairy products contain lactose, which some birds cannot digest. It can also cause birds to develop diarrhea. Although not all dairy products contain lactose.

10. Peanuts


Moldy peanuts can have a toxin-producing fungus that may be dangerous to your pet bird. Please do not feed your pet bird with contaminated peanuts.

11. Grit


Some birds are negatively affected by grits. For instance, when birds such as budgies, parakeets, and love birds overeat grits, they can cause intestinal blockage. However, sands are beneficial to some birds such as pigeons and doves.

12. Mushrooms


Some mushroom varieties are entirely toxic and might be very harmful to your pet birds. For example, Gyromitra mushrooms are very poisonous. Do not feed your pet birds with these kinds of mushrooms.

All the above foods are toxic to your pet birds. They may cause serious health problems and even death if not taken care of. It will be of great help if you do not feed your pet birds with all these foods to ensure they are healthy and free from toxins.
